Two pieces of Yaletown real estate have been selected by the Vancouver Heritage Foundation to receive Places That Matter plaques.

Places That Matter honours spaces that helped shaped Vancouver and is part of the Vancouver 125 Legacy project.

The two Yaletown sites are Recreation Park and the First Gas Station.

Recreation Park was Vancouver’s first athletic park. From 1905 – 1913, the park was home to Vancouver’s Northwestern League baseball team. It was located on the block between Smithe, Nelson, Homer, and Hamilton Streets.

The First Gas Station opened in 1907 at Smithe and Cambie Street. Operated by Imperial Oil, the gas was dispensed from a hot water tank using a rubber garden-hose.

After 37 years of making arguably the best Italian food in Vancouver, Il Giardino will be closing down for good.

The iconic restaurant will make way for new Yaletown real estate in the form of – you guessed it – condos!

The restaurant is operated by the pioneering Umberto Menghi, now 65; he will continue to run his two Whistler restaurants, Il Caminetto and Trattoria di Umberto as well as Villa Delia, a cooking school and guest villa near Pisa, Italy.

The Tuscan-inspired restaurant on Hornby St. with its signature garden courtyard will make way for redevelopment.

“It was a very bittersweet decision to make, as Il Giardino is one of my proudest career achievements,” he said in a statement. “The staff and loyal guests at Il Giardino are like family to me but I’m happy we are leaving on a high note and that diners will get a chance to experience Il Giardino once or twice more before we close and say one last good-bye. I’m deeply grateful for the loyalty and longstanding support of my gracious staff and chefs.”

Over the years, Menghi operated 10 Italian restaurants both in Vancouver and in the U.S. They include La Cantina, Al Porto, Settebello, Il Palazzo and a franchise called Umbertino’s.

Now, we love condos – but we’re sad to see this Vancouver institution leave. Hopefully Umberto will open another restaurant in some new Yaletown real estate soon.

After losing two big names in the video game industry this year, Vancouver happily welcomes Microsoft to Yaletown!

Microsoft moves Blacktusk Studios into its new real estate just two weeks ago, and the company is settling in for the long haul with some big budget productions schedules over the next few years.

From Global BC:

Black Tusk Studios, located at the corner of Robson and Cambie streets, will focus on the development of Triple A games, which to the layperson, is the video game equivalent of a Hollywood summer blockbuster, said studio manager Mike Crump.

“So we are talking big budget, big team, long development timeline and very, very big projects that take a number of years to get through,” said Crump.

The studio will also focus on developing Microsoft’s next big franchise to add to its existing portfolio of high-profile game products such as Halo, Gears of War and Fable, Crump said.

Crump said the studio has a team of 50 and will be looking to double that size by the end of the year. A recruitment plan is already in the works and job postings can be viewed on the studio’s website at www.blacktuskstudios.com.

“We will keep growing from there,” said Crump. “I can’t give a final number as to where we will land, but certainly the growth will continue beyond this year and we are talking about exponential growth.”

Crump said Vancouver’s rich heritage in game development, its depth of local talent and its desirable location — including its proximity to Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Wash. — make it an ideal spot to grow a new studio.

That’s great news for Vancouver’s talent pool and Yaletown is an ideal location to work out of.
